VISA: Essential Information

Vietnam, a rapidly developing country in Southeast Asia, is a popular destination for tourists, business professionals, investors, students, and expatriates. To stay in Vietnam for any purpose, individuals need to apply for the appropriate visa based on their purpose of visit. The Vietnam government has a range of visa options available, each designed to cater to specific needs. Let’s break down the various types of visas available, including the validity periods, requirements, and how to apply.

I. Vietnam Visa Types by Purpose of Visit

In accordance with Vietnam’s updated immigration laws that came into effect on July 1, 2020 (Law No. 51/2019/QH14), there are approximately 21 different visa types that fall under various categories based on the purpose of the visit. These visas are divided into six main categories, each of which provides flexibility for individuals traveling to Vietnam for a wide range of reasons.

1. Tourist Visa (DL)

The Tourist Visa (DL) is the most common visa type for individuals who are planning to visit Vietnam for tourism purposes. The validity and entry type can vary depending on the traveler’s needs. The common options for tourist visas include:

  • 1-month single entry: Allows visitors to stay for one month with a single entry into Vietnam.
  • 1-month multiple entry: Allows travelers to enter and exit Vietnam multiple times within one month.
  • 3-month single entry: Grants a single entry to Vietnam for a stay of up to three months.
  • 3-month multiple entry: Allows visitors to enter and exit Vietnam multiple times within a three-month period.

Tourist visas are ideal for travelers who are exploring the country or planning a short stay for leisure purposes.

2. Business Visa (DN1, DN2)

Business visas are for individuals who intend to come to Vietnam for professional reasons, such as business meetings, negotiations, or offering services. The Business Visa is divided into two types:

  • DN1: Issued to foreigners who work with businesses or organizations that have a legal status in Vietnam.
  • DN2: Issued to individuals coming to Vietnam to offer services.

Business visas come with varying validity periods, which include:

  • 1-month single entry
  • 1-month multiple entry
  • 3-month single entry
  • 3-month multiple entry

These options allow flexibility for business professionals visiting Vietnam for short or extended stays.

3. Student/Internship Visa (DH)

The Student/Internship Visa (DH) is for individuals who wish to study or participate in internship programs at universities or organizations within Vietnam. This visa type is designed for those attending academic courses or practical training. The visa typically lasts for up to 12 months, depending on the course duration.

4. Investor Visa (DT1, DT2, DT3, DT4)

Foreign investors who are interested in establishing or expanding their businesses in Vietnam can apply for an Investor Visa. This visa comes in four categories, each corresponding to the level of investment made:

  • DT1: For foreign investors contributing at least VND 100 billion in capital. Valid for up to 10 years.
  • DT2: For foreign investors contributing VND 50 billion to under VND 100 billion. Valid for up to 5 years.
  • DT3: For investors contributing VND 3 billion to under VND 50 billion. Valid for up to 3 years.
  • DT4: For investors contributing less than VND 3 billion. Valid for up to 12 months.

These visas encourage foreign investment and entrepreneurship in Vietnam, offering flexible visa lengths based on the size of the investment.

5. Working Visa (LD1, LD2)

A Working Visa is required for foreigners who wish to take up employment in Vietnam. There are two main categories of working visas:

  • LD1: Issued to foreign nationals who come to Vietnam with a work permit exemption certificate.
  • LD2: Issued to foreign nationals who need to obtain a work permit before working in Vietnam.

Working visas are valid for up to 2 years, and the visa validity depends on the work contract or agreement with the employer in Vietnam.

6. Diplomatic Visa (NG)

The Diplomatic Visa (NG) is issued to members of government delegations visiting Vietnam at the invitation of Vietnamese ministries or high-ranking government officials. This visa also applies to consular personnel and individuals visiting consulate staff in Vietnam. Diplomatic visas are typically valid for up to 12 months.

II. Vietnam Visa Types by Length of Stay and Validity

Vietnam also classifies visas based on the length of stay and validity. Here are the main categories of Vietnam visa based on duration:

  • 1-month single entry: Valid for a single stay of up to one month in Vietnam. After leaving the country, a new visa would be required to re-enter.
  • 1-month multiple entry: This visa type allows the holder to enter and exit Vietnam multiple times within a month.
  • 3-month single entry: This visa type is valid for a stay of up to three months but allows only a single entry.
  • 3-month multiple entry: This option provides multiple entries to Vietnam within a three-month period.
  • 6-month multiple entry: Suitable for those who wish to travel in and out of Vietnam several times over a six-month period.
  • 1-year multiple entry: The 1-year multiple entry visa is ideal for individuals who frequently visit Vietnam for business or personal reasons.

The primary difference between single-entry and multiple-entry visas is the number of entries allowed. While a single-entry visa only allows one entry into Vietnam, a multiple-entry visa allows several visits within the visa’s validity period.

In conclusion, Vietnam offers a diverse range of visa options to accommodate tourists, business professionals, students, and investors. Whether you are traveling for leisure, conducting business, working in Vietnam, or investing in the country’s growing economy, understanding the various visa types and their validity is essential for ensuring a smooth and legal stay in Vietnam. Be sure to select the correct visa category based on the purpose and length of your stay, and consult with an immigration expert if necessary.
